Benjamin Coy

Dr. Benjamin Coy has performed with the Columbus Symphony, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Brass Band of Columbus, Vaughn Wiester's Famous Jazz Orchestra, and many other ensembles. He has held tenured positions in the Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Iowa, and the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra. He particularly enjoys staged works; he has performed with Opera Project Columbus, the Ohio Light Opera, and the national tour of Hairspray.

Dr. Coy is an internationally-recognized teacher and regularly presents clinics on pedagogical topics at conferences, including the International Trombone Festival and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. From 2015-2023, he served as the brass professor at South Texas College, where he also directed the symphonic band and taught music theory. He now teaches through his own private lesson studio in Columbus, Ohio.

A prolific composer, Dr. Coy has published music through Warwick Music Publishing, Ensemble Publications, Cherry Classics Music, and his own site, coymusic.com. His current project is to expand the spectrum of pieces appropriate for concerto competitions through the orchestration of music previously only available with piano accompaniment.

Dr. Coy earned his doctorate in trombone performance and pedagogy at The Ohio State University. He previously studied in Chicago, earning his master's degree at Northwestern University and his bachelor's at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. His primary teachers were Chicago Symphony musicians Jay Friedman and Michael Mulcahy.

Benjamin Coy is a music professor in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. He teaches trombone and brass instruments and also directs the college wind ensemble (symphonic band).
